Painting the future: Eco-friendly art, using lipsticks

When we think about environmental sustainability, the primary discussion is given to single-use containers, straws, ocean waste, renewable resources, natural materials, etc., but in reality the topic is very broad and calls for creative solutions from producers, traders and consumers.

Why do we talk about sustainability?

The cosmetics industry produces millions of tons of makeup each year, which far exceeds the amount of makeup used by consumers. As a result, at least 10-30% of what is produced ends up in landfills. But part of the total, for various reasons, is in the warehouses of manufacturers or distributors, never reaching the cosmetic purses of buyers. This also happened with the liquid lipsticks in our warehouse.

You may ask - what we did with these lipsticks?

We donated them in the name of art - putting them in the hands of the Latvian Academy of Arts. In turn, the LMA uses them at its discretion, and the first result was already observed in the exhibition "No White Flags" of the Group of the Art Residency "Sustain-Art-Ability". It was held from 5.09 to 27.09 this year and was on display in the Art Space "DUO" of the LMA.

Would you guess with what colours this piece was done with?

We will certainly keep an eye on how this source material will be applied in the future to other masterpieces of art as well.

Were you inspired by the idea of the exhibition and the opportunity to use your old lipsticks for a creative project? Maybe it's time to sort out the contents of your makeup case. Too many lipsticks? Time to paint.
